The compact disc (or CD) is a polished metal disc which stores digital information. Unlike the |floppy| and |hard disks|, the compact disc is non-magnetic. It is read by a laser apparatus rather than a |read/write head|. CD-ROM discs are much sturdier than magnetic disks, and can store large amounts of information, but they cannot be altered by the user.
